Nisus Gallery and Portland City Art proudly present “Over Water”

With just four more days left of the wonderous event that is PDX Bridge Festival, Portland City Art and Nisus Gallery have paired up to present, “Over Water,” this First Thursday (August 5) at Nisus Gallery. This is the last gallery show in the PCA series exclusively featuring PDX Bridge Festival artists. To mark this occassion and to transition from life amid the trusses to open air fine artistry, we have a unique show that offers a different glimpse of our city.

In this Thursday’s show, we have chosen 9 PDX Bridge Festival artists to show non-bridge related work and the result is an eclectic mix of media, size, color and texture. Mixing black-and-white photo collage with vibrant 80’s pop-rockers, grimy visions of life on a subway and crisp clean Americana, this show can best be described as, “pop-urbana with a patina finish.”

May 15 was a big day for Portland City Art; we opened the first of FOUR galleries at the Pioneer Place Mall downtown! Mayor Sam Adams and the new Art & Culture Policy Coordinator, Cary Clarke, came by to celebrate with the artists and PCA. Check out what they had to say about it here, on the Mayor’s blog.

This is just the first in a series of exciting events happening at our new digs. Next month, Gabe Flores and Gary Wiseman will create an intrepid installation in the second gallery. In July, three (if not four) galleries will be turned over to PDX Bridge Festival for a month-long art exhibition celebrating bridges and everything thematically related therein. As the leaves turn from green to yellow, we have an all-star line-up of Portland artists scheduled for Fall. Stay tuned for more!

Dan Ness skyrockets us back to when vintage was new.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… both, or perhaps an eerily nostalgic, highly conspicuous grouping of UFO’s flying their way over floor tiles. With Dan Ness the icons of the past find their way into complex and compelling composistions that walk the line between trendy and truly visionary. Whether its his use of negative space in a mind-bending black and white of Evel Knievel, or an advertisement so perfectly faded that you cannot be positive it was his brush strokes that aged it, Dan’s pieces are sure to make the term mid-century modern seem kitch. In his work, those atomic days are far more complex than a shiny t.v. show or “gently used,” finds at a local resale shop- they are a little subversive, distant, and in his paintings, yellowed with time.

Check out his work this month at Commune Accanto on Belmont or to see more of his work online click HERE.

Abraham Wylie, a masterful illustrator and oil painter. Wylie pushes a swollen caricature of anthropomorphism into the ring with Muhammad Ali, and they dance around each other with grace, mystery and unexpected 1st round knock-outs. Paint splatters right, left, up, down and a then face is etched with a cadmium blue upper-cut.

Everett A. Beidler is an American artist currently residing in Portland, Oregon. His work is included in private collections across the United States, the permanent collection of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and on public display at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers in Cairo, Illinois, which is the first public commission of his career. Images and reviews of Everett’s work have been featured in publications such as Sculpture Magazine, The Daily Constitutional, The Oregonian, and the Willamette Week. His exhibition record includes group exhibitions at the Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton, New Jersey), and the Nu-Art Series Gallery (St. Louis, Missouri). As well as solo exhibitions at Gallery II (Washington State University), the Autzen Gallery (Portland State University), and Gallery 500 (Portland, Oregon). Presently Everett is working on a series of works that incorporate video, installation, sculpture, and performance in his studio in Southwest Portland.

“As an artist, delivering contemporary art directly to an audience is a central focus of the performances I have been conducting since 2007. One recurring theme of my performative work is addressing the repetitive patterns of behavior that are necessary to complete virtually any task regardless of its scope or significance.

“Being an artist is my job and labor is an important theme in my work. As a result, the lunch hour during the work week here in Portland has become an important time for me in which to display, document, and demonstrate my work. It is my hope that carrying out these performances in public locations will serve as a means to call into question notions of routine, ambition, and endeavor. These are just a few of the things that tie us together as a culture of individuals.”

Gallery Hours: Wed-Sat, 11am-4pm

The Trusses Gallery at Pioneer Place Mall is proud to present the work of three phenomenally endowed urban landscape artists. Each with their own convincing aesthetic perspective, these artists bring a stunning centripetal force to the PDX Bridge Festival gallery tour.

Christopher Mooney is well known for his photo-realistic oil paintings of Portland bridges, train yards, buildings, blue collar workers and alley ways. They are so stunningly real, that many artists have to get within inches to believe their eyes. However, you might not want to get that close to Micah Krock’s right off the bat.

Have you ever shaken a blanket at the beach, and as it waves and ripples, you close your eyes from the sand? You might have that same reaction upon seeing Micah’s paintings. Micah takes a Ralph Steadman approach to urban landscape painting, by twisting, turning and leaning a swimming landscape of bridges, buildings and streets of Portland, to the point of making any viewer feel off balance. But, get grounded, because you have some serious pondering left to do.

Brin Levinson is Portland’s most sought after urban dream-scape artist, who can invoke feelings, memories or deja vu trances with each painting that floats out of his studio. As you first glance at his painting of the Morrison bridge, the sepia tone eeriness is unwittingly familiar to a foggy, late Autumn night. But wait… there are no people, no signs of civilization, the concrete is cracked and there is a 6-story elephant peacefully drinking water from under the trusses. The elephant looks so at ease and at home, you’re wondering what the heck the bridge is doing there. Well, because, we have a celebration to do!

Gallery Hours: Wed-Sat, 11am-4pm

The walls of the Arches Gallery are beckoning for a massive 8′ by 8′ wheat paste of a collage Bridge-scape, a 5 foot photo of Portland’s own gorgeous night-time skyline and and a site-specific interactive installation. The goal is to transform the the Arches gallery walls into a multi-faceted collage of bridge and city scape interpretations, which will hug, inspire and propel the performances and engagements it surrounds on the gallery floor. Anyone for a hands-on learning session about how to build a DIY website while being hypnotized by a trio of belly dancers?
