Project Chaboo

August 20, 2009

Project Chaboo is a design collaboration between TomitaDesigns and local
designers/artists which builds a diverse community of creative voices and
good vibes. Designer Ken Tomita created the project in hopes of
strengthening the bonds of the creative community through collaboration and
by showcasing the artists involved.

Artists and designers have been invited to customize Ken’s chaboo with their
signature style. They work with a diverse range of mediums and techniques
including painting (watercolor, acrylic, oil), illustration (ink, digital),
silkscreen, vinyl paint mask, metal (steel, aluminum), wood, felt, laser,
glass, recycled skateboards, fiberglass, and bamboo.

Some of these artists are working directly with finished pieces which Ken
provides. Some design their own reinterpretation which Ken helps fabricate.
Others have chosen to reinterpret the design and fabricate using their own
processes and materials. Project Chaboo is about inspiring and challenging
the collaborators to integrate their own medium and signature style into the
chaboo design. The artists have no formal guidelines for this project but
are encouraged to exercise respect for the design and concept of the chaboo.

Ultimately, the goal of project chaboo is for each artists’ personal voice
to shine through while maintaining the honesty of the original design. The
project will create a network of artists and designers that nourishes both
personal expression and community inspired collaboration.
