Julianna Paradisi

August 20, 2009

Julianna Paradisi finds inspiration where science, humanity, and art converge to create compelling images. She is a visual artist, and a writer.

A nurse for twenty-two years, she has worked in Pediatric Intensive Care and Neonatal Intensive Care in Level I Trauma centers and level III Neonatal units in California and Oregon.  She currently works in Adult Oncology.

Julianna uses a wide variety of materials in her work, creating layers and textures to explore ideas in a visual context. Using thick, rapid brush strokes, paintings develop by scraping away and reapplying paint. She uses brayers, palette knives, brushes and her fingers to apply house paint, wax, oil, pencil and charcoal onto a variety of surfaces, creating images that often evoke strong emotions from their viewers.

Julianna exhibits artwork in galleries in Oregon and Washington, most recently at Anka Gallery, and Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. A multi-media artist, she has exhibited work in ceramic, knitted wire, collage, monotype, and installation.

The American Journal of Nursing (AJN), with a circulation of 340,000 worldwide, is publishing Julianna’s painting Love You to Death on the cover of its October 2009 issue.  AJN accepts six artists annually for publication. Her blog was recognized by the AJN blog, Off the Chart in the April 24, 2009 post: The Triple Talents of Some Nurse Bloggers by Sylvia Foley.

Kaplan Publishing (New York) has included two stories of Julianna’s in New Lives: Nurses’ Stories about Caring for Babies, edited by Kathleen Huggins and released nationally in May 2009.
