Art & Labor & the Labor of Art

June 26, 2009

An exciting new exhibit is slated for this summer at Olympic Mills Gallery, featuring regional and national artists, including renowned guest artist Gwenn Seemel of Portland. Exhibiting alongside Seemel will be Portland regional artists Allen Schmertzler, Celeste Bergin, Susan B. Schenk, and Shelley Radovich, with other top regional artists. Several nationally exhibited artists will also contribute to this timely exhibit, including Anthony Lazorko, Jr., Tom Virgin, and Eugene Rodriguez, with works that explore issues of labor, reinvention, and the rich creative opportunities that have historically emerged in the U.S. during economic hard times.

If history is an indicator of the future, then we are currently experiencing the same fertile ground for artistic expression, collaboration, and expansion as witnessed during the 1930s. Drawing upon our rich collective history, these works will explore the relationship between the arts and labor movements and the reality that human toil is the basis of creativity.

A dual theme of “art as labor” will also be featured in this timely exhibit with works that address these questions:

How is the artist’s work reflecting the current climate of job loss, tough times, social change, and potential for reinvention? How does the artist’s work address issues of labor, making ends meet, and the effects of the economy on family and society? How are the arts uniting, inspiring, and moving us forward?

Opening Reception: Friday, July 17, 6 – 10:00 pm.
